Cause of Hypothyroidism

Autoimmune Thyroiditis (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis): This is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and damages the thyroid gland, leading to decreased hormone production.

Medical Treatments: Certain medical treatments can cause hypothyroidism as a side effect. For example, radiation therapy used to treat cancers in the head and neck region can damage the thyroid gland. Surgical removal of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy) also results in hypothyroidism unless the person receives hormone replacement therapy.

Iodine Deficiency: Iodine is an essential mineral required for the production of thyroid hormones. Inadequate iodine intake in the diet can lead to hypothyroidism, although this cause is relatively rare in countries where iodine is routinely added to salt or other dietary sources.

Medications: Some medications can interfere with thyroid hormone production or utilization, leading to hypothyroidism.

Congenital Hypothyroidism: Some infants are born with an underactive thyroid gland. This condition may be caused by genetic factors or problems with the development of the thyroid gland during pregnancy.

Pituitary or Hypothalamic Dysfunction: Hypothyroidism can occur if there is a problem with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus, which are responsible for regulating thyroid hormone production. If these glands do not produce adequate amounts of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) or thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), the thyroid gland may not function properly.

Certain Diseases and Disorders: Certain medical conditions, such as certain types of thyroid cancer, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and some autoimmune diseases, can also cause hypothyroidism.
